About Grotta Sonora

Hand Made in Italy.

Grotta Sonora is a captivating project focused on crafting and creating experimental musical instruments. Born from the creative minds of Madhava Carrara and Margherita Cioffi, both artisans and musicians, this endeavour reflects their deep passion for sound exploration and craftsmanship.Madhava Carrara, deeply influenced by Indian culture, brings a wealth of musical and artisanal expertise to the project. With years of experience in creating stringed, wind, and percussion instruments using a diverse range of materials, including recycled items, his artistic journey has been one of continual innovation and discovery.

Meanwhile, Margherita Cioffi, a gifted singer and decorator, has lent her creative prowess to the exploration that underpins the Grotta Sonora project. The project began in a cave of Etruscan origin near the ancient village of Calcata in the Treja Valley. It was within this mystical space that their first instruments were meticulously crafted. As fate would have it, the cave provided an ideal acoustical environment for playing these newly-fashioned instruments, ultimately serving as the catalyst for the Grotta Sonora project.

Care for your Grotta Sonora Gong

The metal alloy is very stable and won’t rust, but we recommend to do not touch the gong directly with bare hands, as the oils of your skin could stain the metal. Stains from sweat or skin’s oils, can become permanent if not removed in a couple of days.

We recommend cleaning Grotta Sonora gongs using a soft micro fiber cloth and Isopropyl Alcohol or simple rubbing alcohol is also fine. Don’t use any oil or wax on our gongs!

How to Play a Grotta Sonora Gong

Most Grotta Sonora gongs have the fundamental note tuned to the center and the rest of the natural harmonic series between the center and the rim of the Gong.
The best way to play the fundamental note is to gently hit the center of the gong with our big gong mallet.
These gongs sound great and effortlessly when played with friction balls. The outer band of the gong around the edge is the spot where you can resonate the fundamental note with a big friction ball like the No. 6 Bear Love Flumie.
When playing the inner bands, closer and closer to the center, you can use smaller rubber friction mallets to resonate higher harmonics.

CHECK OUT OUR GONG BAGS FOR EASY TRANSPORT

  • When you transport your gong, we recommend that you place your gong in a padded bag or wrap it in a blanket, face down in your vehicle. This will protect the gong if something is accidentally placed on top of the gong. We don’t want your gong to get dented.
  • It is not recommended to leave your gong in a gong bag for extended periods of time. Moisture in the bag can lead to corrosion.
